Cyran Skies

Welcome to Cyran Skies!

Howdy to my players and to those who have stumbled across our Obsidian Portal site!

I wanted to make a quick post explaining how our campaign is set up, who plays who and what I’m hoping to do with this site.

First off, our campaign is set in Eberron, and is largely inspired by the Joss Whedon’s awesome series, Firefly. One of the key themes in the Eberron setting is the effect of war on people and places. I loved the idea of a group of ex-soldiers who had lost a war and, really, the nation that lost the most in the Last War was Cyre. As in Firefly, the PCs in Cyran Skies are veterans of a war they lost, who now find themselves without a home.

In the coming weeks, you’ll see how the characters spent four years drifting aimlessly before being called to Sharn by their old “friend” Garrick. In the time since the Day of Mourning, Garrick has positioned himself as a minor smuggler/merchant in Sharn and he stumbled across documents suggesting that the grandfather of the PC, Norn, had been involved in the creation of the House Lyrandar skyships. In addition, Garrick discovered that Norn’s grandfather had been presented with one of the early prototypes, as a gift. After a year’s effort, Garrick managed to locate the vessel, in the service of sky pirates in the savage land of Q’Barra. Hiring mercenary troops, Garrick managed to recover it (and free the abused Lyrandar orphan he found piloting the vessel). After bringing the vessel back to Sharn, Garrick set about locating his old friends from the war and paid for them all to come to Sharn, where he had a business proposition for them.

Once everyone got to Sharn, Garrick let know about they Skyship and that, due to his grandfather’s presumed death on the Day of Mourning, Norn was now its owner. In addition, while Rurik had turned his back on House Lyrandar long ago, he bears the Mark of Storms, permitting him to command the elementals bound to the ship. Garrick’s pitch to the PCs was that, while the land of Cyre had been wiped from the face of Khorvaire on the Day of Mourning, they could preserve the memory of Cyre by working together, protecting each other and reminding the other Cyran survivors that the nation endured in its people. The PCs named the skyship the Daughter of Cyre and the hope is that the Daughter will become a sort of “sixth character” in the campaign, in the same way that Serenity was in Firefly.

The characters in the campaign are played as follows: Drew is playing the Eladrin Rogue Norn and the Warforged Ranger Kettle.

Steve is playing the Dwarf Fighter Ruggin and the Human Wizard Saremar.

Adolfo is playing the Half Elf Warlord Rurik.

The campaign is around six months old now, but due to busy schedules, we’ve only had a chance to play a handful of sessions (our group has two other campaigns that we run when we’re missing players at our bi-weekly sessions). I’m going to endeavor to post summaries of all the sessions, but it will take me a while to get caught up for the past sessions.

One thing I’m trying with this campaign is that, sometimes, I run one-shot sessions that we call “War Stories” that are stories of the PCs adventures during the war. For the War Stories sessions, we don’t bother to backdate the guys, we just run them with the characters at the level they’re at when we have the session. We’ve only had one of them so far (which was the story of a punitive raid the guys made against Karnnath), but the players seemed to really enjoy them, so I’m going to be using them more often to help introduce characters the guys met during the war, who they’ll be interacting with in the regular, post-war campaign.

Anyhoo, that’s probably longer than it needs to be, but I hope it gives you readers a feel for what Cyran Skies is all about.
